Buffalo Trail Forest was a remarkable land donation to Sam Shine Foundation from an anonymous donor. SSF will ensure these 250 acres are not developed into a dense residential subdivision. Permanent and intermittent streams flow across the property, regionally-common karst features are present, and a diverse mix of woodlands & open spaces are present.
Buffalo Trail Forest
A portion of this property is a section of the Indiana Buffalo Road Wilderness Road Trail extending across southern Indiana between Kentucky and Illinois. According to the 2015 “The Wilderness Road Indiana Buffalo Trace ” survey research project, focused on 1805-1807 Indiana land Surveyor’s Notes and writings, herds buffalo migrated across this land for more than 3,000 feet between 1490’s – 1810. Perhaps buffalo used the flat, wooded ridge tops to rest.
Buffalo migration had a major influence: It’s very likely tribes of Native Americans used this property as temporary residence as they followed the buffalo herd each year. Trailing packs of panthers and wolves following the herds may have used den-like habitats and water sources found on this parcel during the same time. Regional Native Americans, Indiana Delaware people, referred to the Buffalo Trace as “Lan-an-zwih-kana-wi” – Path of the Buffalo.
Our Efforts
Stewardship efforts focus on the following goals:
- Interplant hardwood trees in areas where woodland stand improvements will reduce shade to a level most beneficial for oak tree regeneration. This will help reduce the time needed for an increased population of oak in the forest understory.
- Continue to reduce the presence of invasive species
- Restore channel erosion sites along southern woodlands access roadways and two creek crossing sites.
- Continually monitor erosion near karst features.
